I ordered "Bug Scare" and I got a Chinese made Jialebao ?!
Instructions say a blue light should come on when plugged in ... nothing happened with the unit I received.
I'm almost tempted to open the toy looking thing to see if actually there is anything inside.

This book starts out talking about insects as friends, they're importance in the garden, and even gives some tips for beekeepers. From there, it discusses diseases insects carry, plants they eat, and insects you find around the house. The book ends with some unusual bug facts.

Each chapter covers so much information. Out of all the nonfiction books I've read, this is the best. I learned quite a bit in a field I've been studying for a few years now. It's a great collection of entomology facts, perfect for bug lovers.

I bought this product to battle aphids on my house plant. It sounds really great in description, but unfortunately my aphids couldn't care less for it. I think they actually enjoyed it :) So I had to go back to the real pesticides.

Did NOT work! I sprayed directly on the bugs, and they jumped with delight. Especially the grasshoppers; I practically drowned them, and they were still hopping around. Didn't smell bad, so it wasn't offensive in the house. That was a plus...but spend your money on another product.

This publication is a must have for anyone dealing with pest of native conifers of California! It is the perfect size to carry in the field while looking at the health of your trees as it fits into your vest or pocket. The photos are excellent, and the guide is one that most anyone can use to determine just what is wrong with your conifers.
With the current catastrophic pest outbreaks in Southern California this is a book that everyone living in the forested areas should purchase, read, and follow up with the other references. It lists which agencies are involved and how to contact them.
A long overdue publication!
Brian Barrette, Staff Chief
California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection
Retired

I found this book to be a very good introduction to the issues surrounding control of pests. It uses cases histories such as attempts to control the gypsy and codling moths to introduce not only the biological and environmental issues but also the political influences on decisions to control pests. It's quite readable. Anyone familiar with Silent Spring will enjoy this book.

Since 1962, when Rachel Carson published her seminal work, Silent Spring, nothing much has changed in our practice of pest control. Carson had advocated that the methods we employ for pest control must be such that they do not destroy us along with the insects. Yet today, despite the lip service we pay to Silent Spring, and in spite of considerable environmental protest, public outcry and the availability of viable alternatives, we still choose to spray chemical pesticides at an alarming rate. In fact, chemical pesticides still remain our pest control method of choice.
Our attitude is to approach pests as organisms to control rather than manage; we exterminate instead of reduce; we dominate rather than learn to accommodate. Why this sad state of affairs remains so is a central theme of this book, which introduces the concept of pest management (as opposed to pest control). Pest management forces us to look beyond the immediate benefits and disadvantages, costs and side effects, of pest control methods towards choosing alternatives that are more environmentally compatible and less harmful to our own health. The author explores scientifically exciting alternative technologies such as biological control, yet admits, as the 1990 gypsy moth invasion of Vancouver has shown, that the public needs more education and assurance on its safety and environmental correctness.
This book provides such an education and forms the basis for novel biologically based strategies involving pheromones, parasitic insects, bio-engineered crops and pest diseases to become standard practice.
Mark L. Winston is professor of biological sciences at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada. He is the author of two previous books, The Biology of the Honey Bee and Killer Bees.

American pests is the first book (at least that I am aware of) for popular consumption on the history of plant pest/insect eradication in the USA. I suppose that this topic does not sound like fun to most people. Nevertheless, for me it is an interesting subject, and if you consider how plant pests affect the price and quality of food, as well as their ability to spread disease, then bug control may begin to sound more worthwhile as something to read about.
The book begins with Colonial America through to the present(almost). The book haphazardly jumps through American history, with no clear breaks. The chapter headings often have little to do with chronology, and are rather broken off arbitrarily. The writing is at times terse, and at times focuses on the mundane. Providing details is fine, but why so randomly? It is no surprise that this book was published by a university printing house, as I feel that a more mainstream publisher would have forced dramatic changes in the book (assuming they'd print something on this topic in any situation). The author is an academic historian, and the book appears at times more for the consumption of historians than the popular reader.
The coverage is also uneven. The post-WWII years are not really covered much. Shockingly, the GMO situation is not mentioned.
In the end, this book really could have used a better editor (I don't know if it had one at all this time), and it needed to be another 100 pages or so longer to be thorough enough. For lack of a better alternative, I recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject.

Oh hellz ya, this stuff is da bomb. Literally. I had an invasion of mites that I barely kept manageable with Neem, H2O and alcohol, SM90, pest strips, etc.
I got DD in a package, the big can (of death) and the one time use fogger.

I've yet to use the fogger... 2 applications about 4 days apart with this stuff, and I haven't caught one little invader in about 3 months. Not to say they won't be back, cause you know mites are The Borg... but still, this stuff rocks. Try the milder things first, if that don't work, all out warfare!
This stuff is like an A-Bomb to their little plans to conquer your world.
